SMT Reels
Surface mount components are packaged on plastic reels with carrier tape. These reels come in different sizes and colors, use various types of tape, and are covered in labels that are difficult to remove.
SMT reels are recyclable and lightweight, but there isn’t much of a market for mixed plastic waste that doesn’t weigh much. That’s why most electronics manufacturers just throw away their used reels instead.
Yet it’s a problem when dumpsters fill up before garbage trucks pick up. Plus, reels that are crushed in the back of a truck tend to spring back to their original shape and take up lots of space at the landfill.
That isn’t good for the environment, and it doesn’t solve an important problem for manufacturers. By volume, about 60% of the waste that Z-AXIS produces comes from SMT packaging. It’s our largest source.
Some companies would just pay for a bigger dumpster or more frequent pickups. But we invested in a solution that’s better for our business, our customers, and the environment. It also uses our in-house engineering talent.
Crushing SMT Packaging Waste
After evaluating different technologies, Z-AXIS purchased a shredder and customized its design and operation. For example, we added machine guards, interlocks, and E-stops to help keep our employees safe.
Our engineering and manufacturing teams also designed and built relays and controls so that the shredder can run autonomously and without an employee pressing a start button and tending the machine.
Inside the shredder, there’s an electric eye that senses the height of the load. Until the load reaches the eye, the machine won’t run. That keeps the factory floor quieter and uses the shredder more efficiently.
We also designed and built a stand so that we could position the shredder over a garbage can and simplify trash removal. Once the waste is crushed, its volume is about 95% less.
Plus, since the waste is thoroughly shredded, it won’t bounce back to its original volume. That means less space in the dumpster, the garbage truck, and the landfill. There’s no need for extra garbage runs either.
